The European Association for Offgrid Infrastructure and Innovation was established to create a single industry voice towards European policy-makers.

As a result of the network challenges that we face, the EAOII has acknowledged that we will have to be creative and innovative in creating offgrid solutions, so will be able to maintain our competitive edge in Europe. Companies and public-sector entities should join the European Association for Offgrid Infrastructure and Innovation to gain influence over EU rules on offgrid and energy communities, unlock concrete project opportunities despite grid congestion, and access a curated ecosystem of technology innovators, financiers, and peers shaping this emerging market.

Policy influence and standard setting

  • Direct voice in Brussels on offgrid, energy communities, EV charging, and congestion relief regulation, at a time when the EU is actively defining frameworks for energy communities and easing permitting and grid-connection rules.
  • Opportunity to coshape technical standards and regulatory templates for offgrid infrastructure (e.g., preapproved models for energy communities, DSOs interfaces, flexibility services), reducing legal uncertainty and permitting delays for members’ projects.
  • Joint advocacy power that a single company or municipality cannot achieve alone, modeled on existing EU energy associations that successfully secured dedicated EU funding, strategies, and enabling frameworks for their sectors.

Unlock projects blocked by grid congestion

  • Platform to develop and promote standardized offgrid and hybrid solutions (microgrids, local storage, flexible generation) that allow industrial sites, logistics hubs, data centers, and real estate developments to proceed despite severe grid congestion in countries such as the Netherlands and across Western Europe.
  • Joint working groups where companies and public authorities codesign replicable business cases and contractual models to replace “waiting list for grid capacity” with concrete offgrid and neargrid alternatives.
  • Access to collective intelligence on how to integrate EV charging, solar, storage, and flexible loads into offgrid or semiislanded systems, mitigating the EV charging bottleneck that many studies identify as one of the most significant barriers to emobility rollout.

Support cities and public authorities

  • Structured help to design energy communities and offgrid zones in line with EU definitions and guidance, which explicitly encourage local energy communities and simplified frameworks for them.
  • A neutral forum to connect cities, regions, and housing authorities with solution providers, investors, and operators to accelerate residential developments currently blocked by grid capacity constraints.
  • Shared best practices from other EU regions that have successfully set up energy communities and enabling programs, reducing risk and internal workload for public-sector entities.
  • High level biannual conferences as the flagship meeting point for all stakeholders in offgrid and congestion relief solutions: policy-makers, DSOs/TSOs, developers, OEMs, software providers, financiers, and municipalities.
  • Year-round networking, working groups, and taskforces that mirror best practices from successful EU energy associations, creating deal flow (MoUs, pilots, consortia for EU calls) instead of “talk shops”.
  • Visibility for members through speaking slots, showcases of reference projects, and curated B2B matchmaking, which established associations routinely use to promote their members’ technologies and projects.

Drive innovation and startup acceleration

  • Annual acceleration program that brings startups with offgrid, storage, flexibility, and digital solutions into direct contact with utilities, OEMs, real-estate developers, and public authorities needing fast, gridindependent capacity.
  • Sandbox style collaboration on pilots in energy communities and offgrid zones, leveraging the evolving EU policy push for community energy and innovationfriendly frameworks.
  • Early access for members to new technologies, business models, and project partners, similar to how existing EU energy associations use innovation workstreams and marketintelligence reports to create competitive advantage for their members.

Strategic benefits for different member types

Industrial & commercial companies

Faster site development despite grid congestion, offgrid/energy community options for plants, logistics hubs, data centers, and large EV fleets; direct channel to regulators to remove local bottlenecks.

Real-estate & residential developers

Access to standardized offgrid/energy community models that allow new housing and mixed use projects to proceed; matchmaking with technology providers and financiers.
